{"id":5728,"date":"2019-02-25T07:47:42","date_gmt":"2019-02-25T06:47:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/leblogaroger.eu\/?p=5728"},"modified":"2019-02-25T08:42:45","modified_gmt":"2019-02-25T07:42:45","slug":"albion-2004-skeldon-2000-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leblogaroger.eu\/index.php\/2019\/02\/25\/albion-2004-skeldon-2000-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Albion 2004 &#038; Skeldon 2000"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\">Demerara Distillers is back with their new \u00ab\u00a0<strong>rare collection<\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb and they decided to kick hard with two great names from their warehouses&#8230; <strong>Albion <\/strong>and <strong>Skeldon<\/strong>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clearly, doing these releases with these names and marks is a really good way to make a good buzz in the world of rum&rsquo;s geek. That&rsquo;s mythical names isn&rsquo;t it ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, that&rsquo;s <strong>not <\/strong>rums from Albion or Skeldon&#8230; the two distilleries are closed since <strong>1968 <\/strong>for Albion and <strong>1960 <\/strong>for Skeldon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&rsquo;s in fact just about profils, receipes&#8230; They call that <strong>Marks<\/strong>. These marks are only there to indicate what&rsquo;s in the cask. Cause with their blends (el dorado 12-15-21), they need different rum profiles and so it&rsquo;s important to know what&rsquo;s in the cask (taste all of them should be a good idea too, but not sure really convenient).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Behind each marks, there is some different yeasts, several pot stills, different fermentation duration, different settings etc etc..  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a crazy article that explain all of that <a aria-label=\"here (s\u2019ouvre dans un nouvel onglet)\" href=\"https:\/\/barrel-aged-mind.blogspot.com\/p\/blog-page_5.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>. <strong>The <\/strong>bible for all demerara fans !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, stop with <em>bla bla<\/em>, let&rsquo;s go tasting what&rsquo;s in the glass !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Albion 2004<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/leblogaroger.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/albion.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/leblogaroger.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/albion.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5541\" width=\"100\" height=\"215\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With <strong>14 <\/strong>years of aging in the hot warehouses from Diamond, this Albion was distilled in 2004 et bottled in 2018 at 60.1%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mark is <strong>AN<\/strong>, as the one from 1994 bottled by velier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So we should find some similarities with this crazy black bottle, and it&rsquo;s a good way to compare these two bottlings (if needed)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Color <\/strong>: Mahogany, really oily rum&#8230; it seems heavy <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nose<\/strong>: Fruity, really fruity with banana, apricot and some coconuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Camphor, eucalyptus, caramel, chocolate, iodine, thiny wood, tabacco, roasted bread and caoutchouc ends the pleasant nose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It smells like molasses but not too much&#8230; just what&rsquo;s needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Palate<\/strong>:  a vivid and sweet attack &#8230; it really sticks to the teeth this stuff!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Molasses, caramel burned, toasted, the bitterness of blood orange, it&rsquo;s really generous. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Menthol and milk chocolate come back as well as vanilla notes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The alcohol is rather well melted to the whole. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, the rum is present but tends to go out quickly enough even, if it leaves us a small rubber tip relatively familiar with the Albion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Price<\/strong>: +- 240\u20ac <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong>:  A very fragrant and generous nose and a mouth quite consistent with this first one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the lack of length is pity &#8230; but it&rsquo;s still a very pleasant moment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Score<\/strong>: 85\/100<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/leblogaroger.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_20190221_105232410.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"466\" src=\"http:\/\/leblogaroger.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_20190221_105232410-960x466.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5677\" srcset=\"https:\/\/leblogaroger.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_20190221_105232410-960x466.jpg 960w, https:\/\/leblogaroger.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_20190221_105232410-595x289.jpg 595w, https:\/\/leblogaroger.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_20190221_105232410-768x373.jpg 768w, https:\/\/leblogaroger.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_20190221_105232410.jpg 1373w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Albion on the left ond Skeldon on right<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Skeldon 2000<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/leblogaroger.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/skeldon.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/leblogaroger.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/skeldon.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5543\" width=\"93\" height=\"221\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So here, we come back from mythical one &#8230;. the last (and probably unique) rums having one day borne the name Skeldon are the two versions proposed by <strong>velier<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having never had the happiness to test these two monsters, I suggest you check <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"here  (s\u2019ouvre dans un nouvel onglet)\" href=\"http:\/\/durhum.com\/skeldon-1973\/\" target=\"_blank\">here <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/durhum.com\/skeldon-1978\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"here  (s\u2019ouvre dans un nouvel onglet)\">here <\/a>what Cyril thinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Skeldon was therefore a sugar plantation that included a distillery, as there was a lot at the time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mark <strong>SWR <\/strong>is the same as the two versions velier, a unique chance to be able to get an idea of \u200b\u200bwhat it could be (or not?). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This version is 58% ABV<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Getting touch to the versions velier being just impossible in 2019, unless you have a good package of euro to \u00ab\u00a0invest\u00a0\u00bb or a right in (very) great shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Color<\/strong>:  very close to the Albion, dark mahogany and very fat<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nose<\/strong>:  more closed, more wooded than the albion, this one does not remain any less good, it just needs more time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The grilled molasses and burnt caramel appearance is there as on the AN, with a wooded side put forward as well as gunpowder. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fruits are recessed but with time the banana arrives with the big blood orange. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dark chocolate powder but also the mint and beautiful roasted notes come to complete the whole. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The set seems heavier, more austere than the Albion but it&rsquo;s really not to displease me in fact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Palate<\/strong>: pwaaa, it&rsquo;s fat, captivating, woody, chocolatey, can be less sickening than the albion, more robust too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A delicate bitterness is present intermixed with spices and always this aspect burned, grilled. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vanilla, salted butter caramel and a slightly maderised side complete the picture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The length is much more impressive than that of the Albion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Price<\/strong>: +- 270\u20ac<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong>: more austere, robust and heavy than the Albion, this one seems to me more accomplished although more linear without aeration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The generosity it releases in the mouth with this superb bitterness is really nice &#8230; after, it costs a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Score<\/strong>: 87\/100<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Come back of the year ?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DDL clearly played on the buzz that could offer these two names, I think they are attentive to what is said on different social networks and other auction sites. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Albion <\/strong>and <strong>Skeldon <\/strong>are the two names on which fans get excited the most, clearly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyway, after 2 Enmore and 2 Port Mourant, they could not offer us that yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So ?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I would say that this third release of \u00ab\u00a0<strong>rare collection<\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb seems to me the most accomplished, even if the Albion does not manage to rise to the level of the Velier of 1994. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that&rsquo;s clearly very good rum, the only thing that could scare is the price, For me it&rsquo;s too high.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Demerara Distillers is back with their new \u00ab\u00a0rare collection\u00a0\u00bb and they decided to kick hard with two great names from their warehouses&#8230;
